We’ve got an announcement to make today.
It’s kind of a big deal… not that anything much is going to change for you, our lovely listener.
We’re changing the name of the show and the website.
We’ve changing from Freedom Papers to Hustle Free.
We came up with the name Freedom Papers because we’re focused on our FREEDOM.
Someone I care about got in touch with me to let me know that the terms ‘Freedom Papers’ can have a negative connotation for African-Americans.
Clearly not where we were going with the name or anywhere near what this show is about, but we had to take a step back and make a decision.
The beauty of stepping back and looking at this from a different perspective is that I realized our branding (while we initially loved it and it made a ton of sense to us), didn’t make much sense. It wasn’t clear at ALL.
What would be someone’s first impression when they came to the site?
Especially if they didn’t know Jon or I at all.
We went into a deep dive of how we approached this, what we’re changing our name (and site to) and how we’re approaching all this.
Learning through Launching Too Soon
We both believe that taking imperfect action beats no action any day.
However… we’ve learned a ton from launching the podcast as quickly as we did as well as launching our physical newsletter (that did nothing) too soon.
We never would have gotten clear on the name or direction had we not launched. It would all still be a guessing game and we could end up being here anyways. We now have validation that our message resonates with people, they like the direction of the show and how we show up. What we didn’t focus on was building the audience FIRST.
We both assumed we’d be able to pull on our individual brands and the rest would fall into place.
Yea… not so much.
We have leveraged our personal brands, but our focus is going to be building this audience.

We realized that we needed to get clear on our messaging. We’re super excited our “F@#K the Hustle” movement and swag. Freedom Papers and our #FtheHustle movement aren’t cohesive at all. There’s no flow to the merchandise we’re going to be selling and our branding.
The crazy thing is this seems so obvious after the fact.
So, to reiterate… here’s what’s happening:
- We’re changing the name from Freedom Papers to Hustle Free (freedompaperspodcast.com is going to hustlefree.net)
- We’re focusing on growing our audience (our minimum viable audience)
- We’re going to create more content (we’re both writing regular posts as well as the podcast posts)
- We’re launching a private Facebook group where we’re going to run challenges for growing your business
- We want to hear from YOU! What do you want from us?
- Our next episode will be on the new domain and under the new show name
- All our previous episodes will be re-branded with the new name (same content, just a different intro)
We cannot begin to tell you how much we appreciate you guys being on this journey with us. Your comments, iTunes reviews and messages have let us know we’re on the right track.
Which is why we’re committed to making this the best possible show and brand that we can.
